Brighton and Hove gardens
Brighton’s terraces climb the downs, and the gardens behind Hanover, Seven Dials, Roundhill and the streets above Preston Park are stacked in steps and retaining walls. Many houses have a raised garden behind a basement kitchen, or a lower yard reached from a first-floor rear door. In Hove and Kemptown the Regency and Victorian townhouses have the same lower-ground arrangement as their London counterparts.
What works here
Salt air is the difference. Within a mile or two of the front we recommend hot-dip galvanising under the colour, with marine-grade stainless fixings; powder coating is also available. For the tight lightwells of Kemptown, spirals; for the hillside plots, split-level flights with landings and lighting.
