Garden staircases in Guildford and the Surrey Hills. The gardens go up and down, so should the steps.
Guildford gardens
Guildford is built on the side of a chalk hill, and the streets around Charlotteville, Pewley Hill and the Mount have gardens that climb or drop steeply behind the house. Out in the villages, Shere, Peaslake, Bramley, plots on the greensand are larger and just as sloped. A single flight rarely works; the gardens want a route with landings, and often a handrail that continues along a path as well as the steps.
What works here
Chalk and greensand both drain well and take foundations easily. Where the slope is long we combine short flights with retaining sections in the same steel so the whole thing reads as one piece. The Surrey Hills is a National Landscape, and some villages have conservation areas, so we confirm permitted-development status for each address.
