Garden staircases in Reigate and Redhill. Steel steps from hillside patios and extensions.
On the hill roads of Reigate and Redhill we design and build steel staircases that connect raised patios, terraces and extensions with the garden below, and your site survey is free.

Outdoor steps for hillside homes in Reigate and Redhill
Plenty of houses in Reigate and Redhill sit above their own back gardens. A raised floor, terrace or extension can finish a long way above the lawn, and an external staircase is a practical route down. Both towns are built among hills. Reigate lies in the Vale of Holmesdale, beneath the North Downs escarpment and Reigate Hill, which rises to 235 metres. Wray Park was laid out north of the town centre in the 1850s and 1860s. Redhill grew in a water-cut gap in the Greensand Ridge, with houses climbing Redstone Hill east of the railway and the hillside of Redhill Common to the south-west. St John’s occupies a narrow promontory between Redhill and Earlswood Commons.
Layouts for sloping plots, drawings and fitting
If a kitchen extension, raised patio or rear terrace sits above the lawn, a bespoke steel staircase can provide direct garden access. Where space allows, the simplest arrangement is usually one straight flight. On the steeper plots of Redstone Hill and below Redhill Common, a longer fall is better split with a level landing part way down; a tight garden can take a quarter-turn layout or a spiral, and a curved flight can follow a rounded terrace. Our guide to straight, turning and spiral staircases compares these layouts, and balustrades and handrails are designed with each one. The site survey is free, it can be done by video if you prefer, and our own fitting team handles every installation. In between, you sign off the drawings, we fix the price before fabrication starts, and our workshop builds the steelwork and gives it a professional spray-painted finish.
Colour, finish and treads
You choose the RAL colour, and galvanising and powder coating can be added as options. On the Victorian houses around Wray Park, a colour taken from the window frames or railings helps a new staircase settle in. Behind a glazed extension, the staircase can be painted to the same RAL shade as the aluminium frames. Where a garden backs onto the woods of Redhill Common, open-mesh treads let leaves drop through.
Sand, Gault and Weald Clay
Ground conditions here change from one district to the next. Reigate town centre and Reigate Heath stand on the sandy Folkestone Beds; north of the railway lies the Gault, a stiff clay; and Woodhatch is on Weald Clay. At the site survey we assess the position, slope, drainage, nearby trees and ground, and only then decide on the support and foundation arrangement.
Planning in Reigate and Redhill
Reigate and Banstead Borough Council is the planning authority for both towns until 1 April 2027, when the new East Surrey Council takes over. The borough’s conservation areas include Reigate Town Centre, Wray Common and Somers Road in Reigate, and St John’s and Redstone Hill in Redhill. The council says Article 4 directions have been served on most conservation areas in the borough to control external changes to houses. Flats and listed buildings follow different rules. What applies depends on the individual property, and we confirm it for your address before any drawings are sent for your approval, as our surveys and drawings page explains.
Garden staircases from Banstead to Horley
Elsewhere in the borough we fit garden staircases, balconies, balustrades and handrails in Banstead and Kingswood on the North Downs, in Merstham, and south through Earlswood, Meadvale and Salfords to Horley. Further west along the Downs, Guildford and the Surrey Hills have a page of their own.
